I have always been fascinated by the old master’s “worm’s
eye views” of angels and the like cavorting about among the clouds Paolo
Veronese (1528-1588) in particular comes to mind. Although primarily known as a colorist and
for his majestic architectural settings, it is the gyrations of his levitated
subjects that so grab my attention. I
also relate well to his architectural backdrops often being positioned parallel
to this picture plane – this diminishes the visual interest of the perspective and
heightening the importance of the main subject.
